Sleep Disorder are on the Rise
The United States is seeing a huge rise in sleep disorders. Sixty to Eighty million people are estimated to be coping with sleep disorders. This is significant chunk of the population and the numbers are still on the rise. This is in part because of the lifestyles that people live today. Obesity is certainly one reason for the increase in sleeping problems. Some sleep problems are simply a result of genetics while others are a byproduct of work schedules.
With more than a hundred different sleep disorders out there, it is no wonder so many people are affected. Some are relatively benign while others can be very dangerous. People of all types can suffer from a sleep disorder at any time throughout their lives. Luckily most can be treated if properly identified.
Sleep disorders lead to many social problems. Because sleep disorder cause a person to be more tired and have reduced alertness and reaction time, they affect a person’s ability properly function. It is estimated that nearly one quarter of all vehicular accidents are a result of a sleep driver. No doubt many of these drivers are tired because they suffer from one of the many sleep disorders. These accidents cost us dearly in health care and taxes.
Not only do sleep disorders cause a person to feel unrested and tired, but they also cause many physical problems. Things like chronic headaches, stomaches, and joint aching are often the result of sleep-related illnesses. Additionally, people who suffer from depression, anxiety, or emotional problems might be suffering from a sleep disorder.
There is still a bit of stigma attached to sleeping problems. Many have long believed that sleep wasn’t that big of a deal. Unfortunately, these attitudes often cause people not to realize they have a sleep disorder and other people may not seek medical help when it is necessary. Doctors often misdiagnose problems without considering the possibility of a sleep disorder.
Today the medical community and public are become more aware of the increasing problem so many have with sleep. This is leading to positive change in which more disorders are being diagnosed and properly treated. There are medications and behavior therapies available for nearly every possible sleep problem. The screening methods have become very advanced. There even sleep clinics in which a person can stay over night. This allows technicians to monitor a persons sleep and take essential measurements that can be used to properly diagnose a sleep disorder. Additionally, these sleep centers are no comfortable and are much like staying at a hotel. The measuring equipment is also small and unobtrusive. Some equipment can even be used at home.
We are now beginning to understand that a good night’s rest is essential for healthy living. A sleep disorder can have lasting impact on all aspects of ones life. If you or someone you know might be suffering from a sleep disorder then the advice of a medical practitioner should be sought. The sooner you get well rested the better.
