Can A Tempur-Pedic Mattress Help You Sleep Better?

However unlikely it may be, the tale of the Tempur-Pedic mattress starts at NASA – the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Sometime in the Sixties, engineers worked on creating a material to help minimize effects of the G-force astronauts must endure. The name they gave to this elastic material was “temper foam”.

NASA never put this new type of foam to use, and eventually released their formula to the public so that anyone could use it in their products. At this point in time the production of memory foam was not completely developed, which minimized how useful it could be.

However, a group of Swedish scientists working for Fagerdala World Foams saw the potential application of the material for use in mattresses. These scientists spent over a decade along with millions of dollars of their own money developing an entirely new type of sleep surface. They called the temperature sensitive material they created “TEMPUR” and a little while later they had it patented.

It’s a fairly complicated process to produce a Tempur-pedic mattress. You must integrate several layers of memory foam with various materials found in other mattresses. The end result of this is a comfortable bed which has the proper support often lacking in a traditional coiled spring mattress.

How does this end up being done? Well, the top most layer of the mattress is the comfort layer and it has the TEMPUR material that’s specifically designed to reshape to your weight and size. It molds itself around your body. Then, as you lie on the mattress you begin to sink in and the next layer, which is the supporting layer, absorbs your weight and distributes it equally across the bed.

Finally, there is the base layer which is the toughest and provides a firm foundation for the mattress. The base layer is typically not made of memory foam since less expensive high density polyurethane foam is sufficient.

The big difference you find in a Tempur-Pedic mattress from a regular innerspring mattress is that it’s specifically designed to react to changes in temperature and weight. It can be firm or soft depending on where the pressure is needed. The material will form to the body dimensions of each person giving them support in the proper places. These mattresses can aid people who suffer from back or neck problems as clinical studies have shown.

A regular mattress will not evenly distribute a person’s weight. That’s why sagging happens in the place where an individual normally lays on it. This continuous pressure on the same spot wears down the padding and will ultimately stop supporting you properly. Most of the time these problems happen in the areas of the lower back or hips, which causes the spine to be in an unnatural position.

Another advantage with a Tempur-Pedic mattress is that they’re nearly maintenance free. You don’t have to flip them or really do anything for them. They’ll never develop body impressions or start poking you with springs, which means they can last up to twice as long as an average mattress. In fact, the company currently offers a 20-year limited warranty on all of their mattresses. So, if you have a bad back, neck, poor circulation or just want a good mattress that will last you at least two decades, this may be the brand for you.

It’s important to remember however, that a Tempur-Pedic mattress isn’t for everyone. They’re very different from a coiled spring mattress and may take some getting used to. While the majority of people report coming to like them after a short period, some never do and have to switch back to a regular mattress. Common complaints include the mattress being too firm, having an unpleasant chemical odor, or retaining too much heat and causing the user to wake up sweaty.

Fortunately, a close look at Tempur-Pedic mattress reviews shows that these problems are fairly rare so you probably shouldn’t worry too much about them. If you’re having trouble sleeping, or are waking up in the morning with aches and pains caused by your current mattress, then it’s definitely worth trying one out to see if it can help.
